Do you think the 13 year old boy named Daniel Hauser of Minnesota should be forced to get his cancer treatment?
I don't think he should be forced to do this. It's ridiculous in the first place that the entire nation thinks chemo is the only way to go in the first place. The cancer Institute is a $300 billion dollar a year non-profit organization and because of the sum of money mentioned these bozo's won't even let anyone talk about any alternative. Yea...let's inject harmful poisons into our body and call it the ONLY treatment for cancer. And if anyone says any different we'll make sure there clinic get's closed down. Poor kid... God Bless him!

No, because he has made his own decision not to go through with the tortures of chemotherapy. He shouldn't have to be subjected by law to under go a medical procedure he never wanted in the first place. Not only is that a waste of his time, it is a waste of the hospital's time to treat someone who doesn't wish to be treated. Not only that, but doesn't all this interfere with our basic American rights?

I think since he is 13 his parents should decide. His parents had not been listed as abusive parents and should be able to make the choice for their son. If he dies during or after chemo..is anybody going to go to jail for forcing him to do chemo? I don't think so...why is this right taken away from parents, to decide which health care they want to chose for their son?

If he had been hit by a truck, should it be his parents' choice whether he received life saving medical treatment or is left to die of his injuries? Should it be his choice? If he was suffocating from asthma, should he or his parents be free to decide whether he received medical treatment or died a horrible death? Same thing. Daniel is a learning disabled child who cannot read, and he has been persuaded by some crazy cult that he is a medicine man and a healer and a religious elder. His parents allowed chemo, but after he had a bad time with his first round of chemo (chemo for lymphoma is tough) his parents became scared - his aunt died of cancer despite treatment, and the crazy cultists who have influenced the family persuaded them that it was the chemo, not the cancer, which killed her. So they discontinued chemo. His condition improved with chemo. It has worsened since chemo stopped. This is a child who has been manipulated, used and lied to; he does not appear to be capable of understanding how ill he is, or even that he is ill at all. The leader of this cult has promised that the alternative cancer treatment he is now taking is 100% guaranteed to cure him. This is, of course, a lie. Remember that in the context of cancer, alternetive is just another way of saying 'unproven'. If a treatment had been proven to work, it would no longer be 'alternative medicine', it would just be 'medicine'. Whatever the convicted fraud who leads this cult is giving him, it has never been proven effective for cancer. If he has chemo he has a 90% chance of cure. Chemo isn't perfect, and it's tough. I know, I've been through it - and I'm fit and well with no sign of cancer five years later. But it has been tested and proven in double blind clinical trials, and we know it saves many lives and prolongs many, many more. The 'alternative treatment' Daniel is receiving has not been tested or proven. It is at best guesswork. Yes, poor kid indeed. He's going to die a hideous, horrible and painful death if his parents and cult leader get their way. I'm not up to date with this story. Has he been found? If not, I hope they find him. I hope when they do some charges of attempted murder are brought - I just hope those charges don't have to be of actual murder. Parents have a duty to their children; if they neglect or endanger their child, that child should be removed from their care. These parents have put their child in mortal danger.

No. I think forcing him to get that chemotherapy is a violation of a basic human right. Are we now at the point that medical treatment that we do not want can be forced upon us? I think that the medical establishment has gained way too much power, and anyone who disagrees with their version of healing is ridiculed or prosecuted like the poor parents of this child. One hundred years from now this sort of chemotherapy will be viewed with the same sort of disdain we have for the practice of bleeding.

First: Until the age of 18 a child has in essence no right under any state or federal law to make decisions regarding their care. Their personal feelings and opinions are taken into consideration by health and legal professionals but their parents or guardians are ultimately the ones making the decision. Second: This is not a matter of standard cancer therapy that works vs. an alternative treatment that works. This "alternative medicine" the family has relied on has done NOTHING to halt the progress of their son's disease, and HE IS GETTING SICKER BY THE DAY. If it WERE a case of traditional medicine vs. alternative medicine with an equal cure rate, I WOULD be in the side of the alternative therapy. This young man has proven he is neither mature nor educated enough to make an informed choice in his care, and his parents are extremely negligent for ignoring their child's education, a court order AND the diagnosis and advice of medical professionals.
