In the UK treatment should start within 18 weeks of diagnosis.

Wow that depends on what type of Breast cancer it is. I had Inflammatory Breast Cancer and the treatment was started a quickly as possible , I had Chemo first then surgery 4 weeks after Chemo then Radiation about 6 weeks after surgery. First step was having a port placed in my chest for the Chemo. There a many different kind of Cancers , Sometime they do surgery first then Chemo, they may or may not always do radiation,or you may have radiationn and no chemo. It just depends on the type, and your blood work andbiopsyy will determine that. Good Luck to you as I have just finished treatment and two reconstruction surgeries. And I now feel much better

In your case it is normal that surgery scheduled in 2 weeks after detection of the disease. It is up to the hospital concerned to decide when to operate, whether chemo or radiation to give first all these things. If the hospital is big and too many patients, it causes delay in each process. Boost the mental courage of the patient. That is very important. Let her/him be confident that with the treatment, the ailment will be thrown out. So be courageous. Best Wishes.

In the UK the NICE recommendation for treatment of breast cancer is: 'No patient should have to wait more than four weeks for any form of treatment or supportive intervention'. For me it was 4 weeks exactly between diagnosis and surgery. Many women I've met through breast cancer support networks had a much shorter wait - 2 days in one case.

It would depend on the subtype of breast cancer, stage at diagnosis and grade of the tumor in the US. If it is an early stage of the disease than a month wait is not considered long . . but if it is an aggressive or high grade tumor than a month would be too long and surgery would have been immediate. So, without more information it is not really possible to answer your question. But in general terms . . the more advanced and the higher grade of disease than the quicker treatment will begin or surgery done . . usually days rather than weeks. I am somewhat surprised that surgery is being done first . . you should ask for a second opinion as generally chemotherapy is done first to see if your type of cancer will respond to treatment by shrinking . . this accomplishes two goals . . one to see if your cancer responds and two to shrink the tumor small enough for complete surgical removal with margins. The reason this is important is if the cancer has metastasized or metastasizes in the future than the oncologist will know that chemo will work or not in your case.

In Australia it would be classed as Category 1 Elective Surgery and treatment in a public hospital would commence within 30 days.

I turned down surgery, chemo and radiation when I was diagnosed with infiltrating intraductal breast cancer more than ten years ago and started juicing and eating a raw food diet- by my own alternative natural treatment plan that I designed for me.- not conventional breast cancer treatment and I'm an R.N. I'm still in perfect health today! Many people with breast cancer have chosen natural treatment and changed their diets to raw food alkaline diets. Nurse Sue
