When you have cancer do you have to stay in the hospital for the duration of your treatment?
Or do you go in ever so often to get radiation, chemo, etc? Can you go to work/school while you have cancer?

Well, for the first few days of chemotherapy they keep you in hospital to see how you react to the drugs initially. After that they can give you a portable pump which gives you the chemotherapy drugs continuously. You can go home for that but I'm not sure if you'd be able to work or go to school given the strength of the drugs. They can take an awful lot out of you. You do go in for regular check-ups though. You can also go into the hospital get your chemotherapy drugs regularly through an IV. As for radiation, you get that done in the hospital regularly. The only part of cancer treatment that would require a hospital stay are surgical treatments or treatment for complications from other treatments, such as blood clots and so on... Hope I helped :)

when my mom had cancer all of her chemo was done on an outpatient basis. it all depends on the type of cancer and what the doctors think is best for the patient, often younger children are kept in the hospital at first but not always. And you can totally go to work or school you just have to be careful of germs because your immune system is weak during the period of your treatments.

There are over 200 different types of cancer and every single one of them have a different (protocol) treatment plan that depends on a multitude of factors. Treatment depends on type of cancer, stage of disease, grade of tumor, age of patient, and patients overall health. Protocols are standardized treatments that are evidence based whenever possible. Cancer is complicated by stage .. which is how far the disease has progressed . . an early stage 1 cancer is not treated the same way that an advanced stage IV disease is treated. The above you need to understand first . . because depending on the type of cancer, stage of disease, grade of tumor, patient age, and overall patient health will determine if a patient needs to be in the hospital or if they can be treated as an out patient. An early stage cancer may just be treated in a clinical setting while an advanced stage cancer might require higher doses of chemtherapy and extended hosptialization. So . . it depends totally on the individual situation. Some patients are treated at a clinic, some are in and out of the hospital and some are given the entire treatment in the hospital (especially children or those in poor health).
