If you were diagnosed with Cancer, would you refuse treatment?
and die because the treatments were tested on animals? I want to clarify that this is not meant to be inflammatory. I am not vegan but I've been studying a bit about the subject and I am curious as to how strong your convictions may be.

Would you refuse to walk on a road that was built by slaves decades ago? Are you aware of how much research the nazi's gained by testing on minorities? We got a lot of knowledge from these tests but it was unethical to say in the least. But once the nazi's were overthrown, did they give up those treatments because the means they used were unethical? No. We can't forget how those treatments came about but that does not mean that a person should refuse treatment. What can be done about the past?

I was diagnosed with cancer and no, I didn't refuse treatment. I'm a vegan to minimise my contribution to animal suffering and exploitation as much as possible; but the word vegan isn't synonymous with the word martyr. We don't live in a bubble of vegan perfection, we live in the real world. The man who invented the word vegan defined it as avoiding the use of animal products as far as is 'reasonable and practical'; refusing medication for a life threatening illness is neither reasonable nor practical - it's just plain stupid. Most medial advances would not have occurred without animal testing, and all medication is tested on animals by law. And while I think Ms Skeptics analogies are excellent, I would not refuse medication recently tested on animals or currently being tested on animals either. Several months ago I read of a drug that may prevent metastasis of the type of cancer I had; it was described as 'at the mouse stage'. I live in fear of metastases; if the drug comes into general use I'll be first in line. I still want to minimise my contribution to animal suffering as much s possible, but I value human life, including my own, way over animal life. ========= EDIT: @ Fruitarian Drum Wizard - ' I wouldn't GET cancer'? Don't be so arrogant and don't be so sure. I thought - when I thought about it at all - that my healthy vegan diet would at least help prevent cancer - it didn't. And there is no 'natural treatment' proven to treat cancer.

Heck no - I am a vegan, not an idiot. My mantra is about minimization of my impact on animals, I cannot live a perfect life. I use power, I own a home, I create garbage (all of which contribute to destructions of natural habitats). I also take medications, and god forbid I get cancer will seek the most aggressive treatments my body can handle.

As Ms. Skeptic pointed out, a number of things we enjoy in our daily life and even some medical advances came about because of things we now consider unethical. If a drug or procedure tested on animals may save my life, I will do what is necessary to try to stay alive. Hopefully some day there will be ways to test medicines and medical procedures that don't involve animals, and I hope scientists will work toward that. However, I am fortunately healthy, and in my daily life I can avoid products that were tested on animals, so I do.

Cancer and "treatments" that were tested on animals are all part of the same un-natural paradigm that gives us un-natural food and toxic environment. What I'm saying is: As someone who eats like the primate I am, drinks purified water, keeps stress down, etc, I wouldn't GET cancer. Even if I did, I would use natural treatments (the body is the healer), not the Chemo that destroys the body. My convictions are strong enough to be vegan. That's all people need to know. The reason we're defensive is, this type of questioning is usually meant to chip away at vegans so the asker can feel better.

I am not a vegan, but I would avoid most conventional treatments. Chemotherapy and radiation are known to cause cancer. Excising a tumor might be considered depending on type and location. An interesting video on You Tube shows a new theory and treatment for cancer.
