Asking money for cancer treatment from friends?
Asking money for cancer treatment from friends? I've been desperate trying to find money to continue Mom's treatment for stage IV breast cancer. Mom is responding to treatment but we are running out of money. I hated doing this but sent an email to a couple of friends of mine asking for a possible financial support. Now I feel really bad and ashamed of having done this. They might be sitting and wondering how they should react. I haven't seen these friends for more than 10 years, we are in different continents and have been in touch via email since about a year. They might be even thinking I'm being a scam. Maybe I should write them back and apologize and explain that I was desperate and that we will be fine, and they can just forget my previous email. But again it's so awkward now...

Sorry to hear about this, but what exactly is your question?

I'm sorry about your mother. But what you did was really bad behavior. You put people, not friends....you haven't seen these people in over ten years or talked to them in over a year (those are not friends) in a really uncomfortable situation. You most likely made them feel very awkward. You should not even ask close friends for money - there are agencies that you can contact through the hospital or your mothers treatment center that are designed to help indigent people. You should respond to them saying that you were out of line and are sorry for asking and putting them in an uncomfortable situation. And don't add how desperate you were or you would not have asked - that's the same as continuing asking for money. The best to you and your family

Sorry about your Mother, that can't be easy for either of you. I think there might be help out there if you look hard enough. Here's a place to start. If I got an email like that from someone I hadn't spoken to in years, I would assume that a scammer had hacked their account and was spamming their Address Book to try and steal money You can write back to say that you are sorry for the mass email Why not get your church or a local school or some other local organisation to help you do a fundraiser to help fund the treatment - a 10k run, car wash, bake sale, etc
