Question about people who receive radioactive iodine as treatment for Thyroid cancer?
If someone receives radioactive iodine as the treatment, is it possible for them to contaminate things or people? For example, if one were to use the same restroom is there a rist of contracting radiation? Just wondering the risks involved.. thanks Don't think that anyone will 'glow in the dark', was just informed to stay more than 3ft away for 1 wk..... so wondering why that is. Thanks.

My sister had this treatment and had to stay in an isolation room in hospital until her radioactive readings were down to a safe level. She couldn't see her baby grandson for about 2 weeks after she came out of hospital. After that she could go back to normal contact with everyone. She says that the worst thing about it was being in the isolation room on her own as she got so bored because the TV didn't work.

Radioactive iodine is used in more than one type of cancer. My husband's grandmother had an implant when she had bowel cancer. There isn't enough radioactivity to infect anyone. Everyone around is safe. No one will glow in the dark. Absolutely no risk of anyone becoming contaminated. If there was that much radiation to do this to others around a patient with this, think what it would do to the patient. like radiation poison, vile illness. Of course not, There's just enough to kill a tumor, or cancer cells. It worked for his grandmother without side effects.
