Breast Cancer Treatment
I wanted to know if anyone has gone under the chemo and radiation therapy for breast cancer. What kind of reaction did you have to the drugs? Where you able to work during treatment? What has been the overall outcome. My mother is making the choice of chemo and she wanted to know how others have done under the same treatment.

I've had chemo , but not for breast cancer. Treatmnet has come so far. I was able to work ,but was very tired. While going through chemo I cut down on my hours. Everyone is different and it depends the combo of drugs. Make sure she eats right and gets the rest she needs. Good luck And God bless.

I had chemo and radiotherapy for breast cancer. People's reactions to chemo vary; some people manage to work, though rarely full time, but most people don't in my experience. I didn't, and don't think I could have. Chemo isn't easy; my experience, and that of many people I know, was feeling exhausted and ill for a week or so after each chemo, ten feeling more like myself again though still tired. Nausea is pretty much inescapable, but anti-sickness drugs are very effective and I never actually threw up. Hair loss is likely, depending on the type of chemo; it soon grows back. The steroids that are given as part of the treatment can give you a huge appetite, and many people put on weight - I did. Constipation is a common and very unpleasant side effect in the days after each treatment. Depression can be a side effect, and was for me. A metallic taste in the mouth is common; sucking pineapple chunks, especially frozen ones, helps. She should rest as much as her body dictates, and try to get a little exercise too. I manage a walk most days except when I was feeling at my worst As I said, side effects and their severity varies from person to person and other people will probably tell you about different ones. Chemo isn't easy, but - although I almost decided against it - I'm glad I did it. Radiotherapy is tedious, but it's a walk in the park after chemo; fatigue is a common side effect. I was diagnosed almost five years ago; my cancer was grade 3, stage 3 with 13 lymph nodes affected. I am currently fit and well, with nosign of cancer at my most recent check up. If your mother hasn't found them already, she might find these sites useful; as well as loads of information they have forums where she can talk to others who are going and have been through the same thing: http://www.breastcancer.org http://www.breastcancercare.org.uk My best wishes to your mother for her treatment
