Treatment for breast cancer in the early 1960's?
I had a grandmother who died from breast cancer in the early 1960's. I am wondering what kind of treatment was available in a rural town back then.

1960s the treatments for Cancer was not very popular. It was considered as a deadly disease and people used to fear (even now the fear is there) In Major cities some treatments were available. At that time the detection machinery and devices were not know. Even the doctors to diagnose the disease and treating it were very few. in most of the cases the disease was unnoticed and the symptoms cam up at Stage III or IV level when it is considered terminal. In the History of Cancer some of the milestones are - The era of cancer chemotherapy began in the 1940s with the first use of nitrogen mustards and folic acid antagonist drugs. Cancer drug development has exploded since then into a multi-billion dollar industry. The targeted-therapy revolution has arrived, but many of the principles and limitations of chemotherapy discovered by the early researchers still apply. The United States Congress created a National Cancer Chemotherapy Service Center (NCCSC) at the NCI in 1955 in response to early successes. This was the first federal programme to promote drug discovery for cancer - unlike now, most pharmaceutical companies were not yet interested in developing anticancer drugs. The NCCSC developed the methodologies and crucial tools (like cell lines and animal models) for chemotherapeutic development. In 1965, a major break-through in cancer therapy occurred. James Holland, Emil Freireich, and Emil Frei hypothesized that cancer chemotherapy should follow the strategy of antibiotic therapy for tuberculosis with combinations of drugs, each with a different mechanism of action. Cancer cells could conceivably mutate to become resistant to a single agent, but by using different drugs concurrently it would be more difficult for the tumor to develop resistance to the combination. New knowledge about the molecular biology of cancer and new tools to specifically target aberrent proteins are opening up new possibilities. The next two decades will see two competing strategies of cancer therapy: small molecular inhibitors and adoptive immunotherapy with re-programmed effector cells will match strengths in an attempt to finally cure cancer.-

In the sixties available treatment in a small town would mostly be surgical removal of all cancerous tissue that was possible to remove. Now, there are many options available and discovery of the cancer can occur at such an early stage that successful treatment after surgery can occur before the cancer metastasizes. New radiation treatments available is mammosite.com Good luck and get regular mammograms. My cancer was discovered before there was even a lump.

Very little. As for now - Try Vitamin C therapy. A few years ago a cancer specialist came out with a paper that said the best cancer/infection fighter found to date was Interferon. At the time it was $15,000 a gram. The paper also said that Interferon was a by-product of the natural breakdown of Vitamin C in your body. Shortly after that the FDA tried to make Vitamin C by prescription only. Guess why? The FDA has the RDA for Vitamin C set at 64 mg a day, just enough to ward off scurvy. Linus Pauling, who got a Nobel Prize for his work with Vitamin C and a second Nobel Prize for Organic Chemistry, said that 1000 mg a day should be the minimum and 2000 mg a day if you are sick or smoke. He played tennis almost daily until the day he died at 96. Personally, I got sick twice a year for 2 weeks at a time, for more than 20 years, with something to this day the doctors have no idea what it was, but for a week in the middle of those 2 weeks I was flat on my back. I started Vitamin C therapy once I gave up on the doctors. I took enough to be asymptomatic for those 2 weeks. Too much and I got diarrhea and too little and I got sick. Within a narrow range, and it followed a bell curve over those 2 weeks, I was not sick. At the height I was taking 40,000 mg a day and 300,000 over the 2 weeks. After 2 years of that I have not been sick since รข€“ more than 15 years. Vitamin C acts as a natural diuretic so you need to drink a lot of water and watch your body in total, but my kidneys did not dissolve as the doctors predicted, or get massive kidney stones as other predicted. I did not dissolve my bones as some predicted or completely calcify my joints as others predicted. I had no side effects at all. It might be something to consider.

Which means a healthy lifestyle, diet and nutrition.
