Yes, radiation can cause cancer but it takes a long time. For cancer radiation and chemotherapy are immediately cure or relieve the cancer patient.

Radiation is useful in treating cancer because the cancer cells are considered to be rapidly proliferating, and radiation especially damages rapidly growing cells. Radiation can cause cancer, but the cancer often depends upon the amount of exposure, the type of radiation, and the portions of the body exposed. For example, skin cancers are more likely in persons who have spent lots of time in the sun, with exposure to ultraviolet light. Chemotherapeutic agents useful in treating cancer are selected because of their ability to damage rapidly growing cells in a manner different from radiation, usually by interfering with or disrupting cell division.

Hi Michael. I understand where you are going with this. It's kind of like saying "Happy Monday Morning". Right?! Okay, let me see if I can explain a little bit of this - I have leukemia. I have to take chemo each day to fight the bad cells and try to keep them down and slow their path. People that go for radiation are going for the bone marrow transplants. They radiate the person to kill off all the bad cells and than put good marrow from a donor into them. It sounds very scary to me, and I never had a match anyway, so it wasn't an option anyway. Even as I am typing this - I know it sounds like from the dark ages, but that is how they do it. And believe me, chemo is no darn fun to take. But I guess it beats doing nothing for the leukemia. Hope you are healthy and never really need to know. Take care.

Radiation and Chemotherapy are not the same. Second, radiation can cause lymphoma and leukemia and even greater issues if given in too high of a dose. If I were given the same dosage that they give lab rats, then I might get cancer too.

Radiation is just a form of energy. Too much energy, and your DNA may get damaged and turned into cancer cells. But energy can be used to kill the cancer cells and stop them from spreading.
