Hypothetically, would it be wrong to refuse to help pay for a parent's treatment for lung cancer if they smoke?
and you have been telling them their whole life to quit?

Sometimes lung cancer is not caused by smoking...even in a smoker. sometimes it is environmental, or genetic. beyond that, having lost a parent to cancer (not lung or smoking related), I think I would feel awful if there was something I could have done to help and didn't.

I wouldn't pay if I were you. I mean, ok, if I smoked too then I would help out if I could, but if not not only did i NOT smoke but I've also been telling them to quite, why should I? that was their decision not to listen to you therefore their health is crashing. :/ Good luck telling them you won't bite though I couldn't do that it would be too awkward.

Of course it would. If you potentially had the opportunity to save their life and chose not to it would be like saying I told you so. You should help family out whenever possible

Well, hypothetically of course, if they got lung cancer I would help pay. I would think that getting lung cancer would be a sure enough sign that smoking is bad. And I would tell them that if they continue to smoke and get lung cancer AGAIN that I would not help for treatment that next time around.

if they smoke, the treatment for lung cancer wont help really, so there is no point. so no its not wrong to refuse to pay.

And would "I told you so" make you feel right. A person needs love, reassurance, and to know someone is there for them in that situation. Turn it around, would it be wrong for a parent to refuse to help pay for your medical treatment for lung cancer if they had tried to get you to stop smoking? Why would this question even cross your mind?

Yes. Ultimately, they're you're parent. They're human. All human's have faults, and smoking happened to be one of theirs. Doesn't mean that you should show them less love or even deny them of something that could save their life, even if the fault is what caused the problem. I'm sure there's things you do that they'd prefer you not to do, or even worry about you for. High horses are not pretty.

I find it hard to believe that you can even ask such a question
