After head and neck cancer treatment, how long before you could eat solid food again?
I had cancer on my tonsil which spread to the lymph system, so underwent chemo therapy and radiation treatments to my neck. I haven't been able to eat solid food since february. I can eat ice cteam, jello or soft fruits but nothing solid. Anyone been through anything similar? Any advise? It drives me crazy seeing food ads on tv. I want everything I see, even stuff I really don't like, but just can't eat. Btw, my prognosis is good, the tumor has shrunk significantly. Thank you, Maxie, but all the docs say is that it varies from person to person, from a few months to a year or more.

I think the doctors treating you would be best equipped to answer this question .... god bless and Cheers to good health and a quick recovery

David, sorry that has to be really difficult to go through. Is there any chance you can put solid food through a powerful food processor to liquidify it? Like a smoothie. It might not look good, but I bet it would taste pretty close to the original.

Ask your ENT to refer you to a speech pathologist who has extensive practice in treating swallowing/chewing disorders related to head and neck issues. Such a practitioner can guide you through the process of returning to a diet texture you will be able to tolerate safely. Interestingly enough, just about every patient I had in 20 years of treating patients like you wanted a cheeseburger more than any food or drink other than coffee!
